Vodafone to Bring Back EU Roaming Charges for UK Customers Abroad

Vodafone has brought back roaming fees for U.K. customers who travel to Europe. This is the second mobile operator to do this post-Brexit, after initially stating that they did not intend to reinstate them.Customers who upgrade or are new to the "selected plans", will be charged at minimum 1 per day to use their phone in EU destinations.BBC News reports that the rules for upgrading and new customers will be changed starting Wednesday, August 11. However, charges will not apply until January.Vodafone stated that existing customers would not be affected by the changes, as they will continue to be on their current pricing plan. All customers will be able to roam in Ireland.Customers affected by the January ban will be charged 2 per day for their European roaming data allowance, or 1 if they have purchased an 8- or 15-day bundle. Fair roaming data limits of 25GB per month apply.Mobile customers didn't have roaming fees before the U.K. left the European Union. Most phone tariffs count calls, texts and data in EU countries as the same as domestic use.However, the EU trade agreement was signed December 2020. Mobile operators were once more able to charge customers for travel in Europe, with transparent and reasonable rates.EE was the first operator in June to announce new roaming fees. EE's new roaming charges will go into effect January 20,22. They are initially only applicable to new EE customers, or customers who have upgraded their plans and contracts since July 7, 2021.EE, O2, Three and Vodafone were the three largest U.K. mobile operators. They initially stated that they did not plan to reintroduce roaming fees after Brexit. However, all have made changes under a "fair usage" clause. O2 has a roaming limit limit of 25GB and charges 3.50 per gigabyte for data over that. Three, on the other hand, has lowered its data limit to just 12GB per month.
