Even if you aren't the most avid birdwatcher, you can probably identify a woodpecker if you see one in a tree. If nothing else, you'd know that they use a drill-like beak to make holes of varying sizes in order to find insects to eat, or create a hole large enough to live in.

It's annoying to listen to, but it can do some damage. How to encourage woodpeckers to move along a different area is here.

What are woodpeckers pecking, and why?

Unfortunately, that is not the case, as it would be one thing if the woodpeckers were stuck to the trees. They can also damage your home, garage, shed, and other structures. This isn't ideal, because these holes in your home can let in animals and cause structural damage.

They gravitate towards wood, but have also been known to peck at siding and air conditions. Whypeck metal and other non-wood materials? Birds make noise to attract mates.

woodpeckers are an important part of your local environment. You don't want to do away with them, but you would appreciate if they took their talents elsewhere.
