Gangnam Style, a satirical sensation that is largely considered a major international breakthrough for K-pop, was released ten years ago.
The pop legend is reflecting on the success. Psy referred to Gangnam Style as a "one-hit wonder" for him in the global market while promoting his latest single. During a press conference for his new album Psy 9th, he said that it was so exhausting at the time of its success that it wasn't worth it.
Gangnam Style made Psy an icon in Korea, where he was already a star. He became a meme, and there were people who thought he was Gangnam Style.
Psy, who now runs his own label, P Nation, described the modern popularity of Asian acts like Blackpink in the West.
He said that there are cases where the song increases in popularity and cases where the artist increases in popularity.
Gangnam Style may not have provided Psy with the global longevity he desired, but it was the catalyst for the success of the industry. The outsized popularity of the music video, which recently passed 4.4 billion views, may have led to a change in the criteria for radio play and the inclusion of YouTube streams.
He said that the group achieved unfulfilled dreams like reaching no. 1 on the Hot 100.
