At an electric St James' Park on Saturday, the Reds claimed a tense 1-0 win over the Tynesiders.

The only goal of the game was scored by Naby Keita in the first half, as Martin Dubravka put in an excellent display to keep the home side in the game.

Bruno Guimaraes came dangerously close to equalising with five minutes left on the clock, as the Reds failed to make the most of several chances.

The result saw the Reds move up to the top of the table.

The visitors defense was under pressure from the start, as they found their way into the box.

The Reds responded well, and began to grow into the game with chances falling to Diogo Jota, Keita, and Virgil van Dijk before Keita opened the scoring. On 19 minutes, the player finished off a slick move that started with a James Milner challenge on the other side of the field.

The ball was passed to Keita on the right, who played a one-two with Jota, and then fired a shot into the open goal.

The flag was not up for the goal that was scored by Miguel Almiron with five minutes to go in the first half.

When Jota powered a Jordan Henderson cross at goal, Dubravka touched the attempt over the bar in one of several impressive saves, as the Reds continued to search for a second.

The visitors failed to take their chances in front of the goal after the break. In the 60th minute, Sadio Mane had a chance to score after a great run from Joe Gomez down the right wing, but he pushed his effort wide of the goal.

Guimaraes had a chance to equalize in the 87th minute when he found space on the edge of the box and fired a low shot, but Alisson covered it well and the Reds held on.
