Mino Raiola fought until the end to defend his players, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Erling Haaland.

Saturday 30 April 2022.

Mino Raiola, one of the most influential agents in football, has died at the age of 54.

The family of Raiola shared a statement on his account, which read: "In infinite sorrow we share the passing of the most caring and amazing football agent that ever was."

Mino fought until the end with the same strength he put on negotiation tables to defend our players. Mino made us proud and never told us.

Mino touched many lives through his work and wrote a new chapter in the history of modern football. His presence will be missed. Mino will continue to make football a better place for players.

We would like to ask for respect for the privacy of family and friends in this time of grief, and we would like to thank everybody for the huge amount of support received during these difficult times.

Raiola said on his account in January that he had not required an emergency intervention.

Raiola's family confirmed his death two days after incorrect reports of his death spread. The head of the anaesthesia and intensive care unit of San Raffaele hospital in Milan, where Raiola was being treated, said that he was angry with the phone calls from pseudo-journalists who speculated on the life of a man who is fighting.

Raiola's rise from pizzeria worker to super-agent

Maybe the name of Roderick Turpijn doesn't mean much to you. He was a Dutch footballer who made a few appearances for Ajax in the 1990s before moving on to De Graafschap and drifting out of the professional game by his mid-twenties.

No matter. He was already set up for life by that transfer.

Turpijn gave an account of the deal. His agent walked out on negotiations with De Graafschap, an unremarkable Dutch team, in an extraordinary act of brinkmanship. He wanted them to match Turpijn's salary.

The club threw in bonuses. Impressive work even before you find out that the figure his agent claimed Turpijn was earning was pure fantasy.

Raiola was that agent.
