legends

The future is called the legends of tomorrow.

CW

The CW axed two of its Arrowverse series, Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow, after three and seven seasons respectively. While Batwoman has its fans and they are sad about its cancellation, what has been done to Legends of Tomorrow seems downright cruel.

While other Arrowverse shows have been canceled in the past few years, they were allowed a series finale that was a series finale. Caity Lotz's Sara Lance, who has been in over 150 episodes of Arrowverse shows, feels terrible for the seven years that the show has been on the air. She will disappear now.

You might have expected the compromise to be a shortened final season to sort out the remaining plotlines. That appears to be what's happening with The Flash, which has a shorter season 9, and it appears like it's going to be its last. It was not possible for the CW to spare that for the show, even if it was possible for the characters to appear elsewhere in the Arrowverse in the future.

It seems that WB/DC is on the way to dismantling the Arrowverse, and most everything in proximity to it. The shows that are over now are Arrow, Supergirl, Black Lightning, and Batwoman. Most likely, the flash will end in another season. Superman and Lois may not have the longest lifespan as DC looks toward bigger budget, movie-connected series like James Gunn's Peacemaker or the upcoming Penguin spin-off. The Arrowverse series in their seventh, eighth, ninth seasons seem to be relics of another era because of the pressure from Disney Plus's Marvel series. The core of the Arrowverse has been excised completely at this point, so there may be a few last attempts at this style of show.

In a normal year, the CW would have picked up these shows again for another season, but the final complicating factor is that the CW is being shopped around for sale, and low-performing series are not exactly a boon for that process. The deal the CW had with the streaming service would not apply to the next seasons of the shows, which is likely to be a factor in the decision.

It comes down to business, not personal, but it will feel personal for many fans who expected that seven years of investment in a show like Legends would yield something at least resembling a satisfying experience. Unless plans change, no luck.
