The San Francisco 49ers have a wide receiver named Deebo Samuel who is still a member of the team. If the Niners are successful, that will be the case for a long time.
The trade deadline became a soft one this week after Samuel told Jeff Darlington about his trade request.
John Lynch said he could not imagine a scenario in which he would trade Samuel. On Thursday, the Niners received interest in a deal, but nothing stretched Lynch or coach Kyle Shanahan's imagination to the point that a deal became a reality.
You will consider anything, but there is no player like Deebo. It is hard to see how that helps your organization. So, you try to look into all the aspects of it and what people are willing to do and nothing was even remotely close that we thought it would be fair for the Niners.
The New York Jets were said to be the team that made the biggest push to acquire Samuel in a deal that also involved a pick swap. The Niners declined those overtures, and the Jets used that selection on Ohio State wideout.
For the first time, Shanahan addressed the situation. He acknowledged that he was surprised and disappointed by Samuel's trade request, but also pointed out that in scenarios involving contracts, these things tend to happen.
Like Lynch earlier in the week, Shanahan wouldn't say what spurred Samuel's trade request, only that there is a lot of things that play into it.
With Samuel remaining on the roster through the draft, Lynch and Shanahan were optimistic but not certain that the team and its star receiver can find common ground.
There are certain things that everyone is trying to do and then you see what you can do and work from there. Hopefully, when this is all said and done, we will get the best thing for the Niners and the best thing for Deebo, because we would love to keep going how we are. We know that is in front of us.
The past two nights have brought some developments that could help make up with Samuel. The Philadelphia Eagles promptly signed A.J. Brown to a four-year, $100 million extension that includes $57 million in guarantees, after he was traded from the TennesseeTitans.
Brown is represented by an agent. The Niners and Samuel could use that contract as a benchmark.
Lynch said that all the situations are unique. We tried to do what was right. We believe that we can find a way through this and it will be good. We are encouraged about that.
The Niners made three picks Friday, including the addition of another running back and a receiver in the third round. Both choices filled needs but could also be seen as a way to lighten the load on Samuel, who accounted for 28% of the Niners' yards from scrimmage in 2021, fourth most by any player in the league.
I think they both can help with that. We would love to have a speed receiver. There are lots of ways the draft could have gone, but we thought the picks in the third round were the best for the team.
