Positives.
Very fast. He has another gear with the ball in his hands.
I was twitched up. There are moments of great explosion out of breaks.
A natural ball-carrier with great all-around movement skills. Will be a threat.
Excellent flashes of making difficult catches and tracking the ball.
NEGATIVES.
Not as physical as he could be.
Route running can be too loose. Will need to be more precise in the league.
Route tree will likely be limited to vertical routes and quick hitting YAC routes.
Catching technique is not consistent. The ball gets into his frame too often.
The statistics for 2021.
10 G, 49 REC, 803 YDS, 9 touchdown.
Over all.
Danny Gray's speed and explosiveness are easy to get excited about.
Gray, with a fair build at 6'0'' and 186 pounds, wins with speed. He jumps out of his stance at the line of scrimmage and builds up speed. During his time at SMU, he often separated from the defensive backs on go routes and posts.
Gray seems to find another gear once he has the ball. He does well to transition himself from a pass-catcher to a ball-carrier by quickly bursting to top speed, which will allow him to turn mundane catches into big plays. He can make defenders miss in one-on-one situations.
Gray isn't a complete receiver yet. His route tree to the intermediate area and middle of the field is missing.
Gray takes too long to get used to his breaks, which makes it difficult for him to separate consistently. He doesn't have the strength at the top of his routes to keep the corners off balance. It will take time for Gray to become a complete route-runner.
Gray is a mixed bag. He can be frustrating on a down-to-down basis. Gray tends to let the ball into his frame rather than attacking it when he is in the middle. He contorts his body to make great catches when he finds the ball down the field. Gray could be a real threat if he can tap into that side of his game more often.
Gray has exciting speed and potential. He is dangerous with and without the ball, and he has the size and movement skills to become a complete receiver. Gray will need to improve his skills as a route-runner and pass-catcher. He wants to be a speed threat off the bench while he cleans up his game.
