Kevin Feige's announcement that Jon Watts would be the director of the Fantastic Four movie made a lot of sense because of Watts' involvement in the Spider-Man movies. The plans for the First Family to return to the big screen have hit a roadblock.

Jon Watts walked away from the Fantastic Four movie because he wanted to take a break from making superhero movies. Kevin Feige stated that working with Watts on the past three Spider-Man films was a joy and that the studio would like to collaborate with him in the future.

We were looking forward to continuing our work with him, but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away.

It is easy to understand why Watts would want to take a step back from the franchise machine, as working with the Spider-Man movies was an incredible and life changing experience. There is little question that the next Fantastic Four will be the major introduction to the MCU following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox. The next Fantastic Four doesn't have a projected release date.
