The United Methodist Church's Council of Bishops acknowledged the inevitable break-up of the church at the end of a five-day meeting Friday.

The Global Methodist Church will become a reality on Sunday. Its leaders have been frustrated by the continued defiance of the United Methodist Church's bans on same-sex marriage and the ordination of openly gay clergy.

The launch of the new movement was sad and sobering, according to Bishop Thomas Bickerton.

He said that there is no perfect church.

He prays that the infighting will stop and that the mission of the UMC will be rediscovered. He urged the UMC to think of May 1 as its launch day even though it has suffered defections.

He said that the United Methodist Church was not interested in continuing sexism, racism, homophobia, irrelevancy and decline.

Cynthia Fierro Harvey, who was president of the council, was succeeded by Bickerton.

Harvey acknowledged the inevitable splintering of the denomination when she preached April 25 during her final address as the Council of Bishops president.

The leader of the movement said the launch would be low-key.

This is the date that we can start receiving churches as they leave the United Methodist Church, and that will take a long time, according to the chairman of the new denomination.

Clergy must adhere to the doctrine of marriage being between one man and one woman, a core point of division in the United Methodist Church for decades.

Some churches are expected to join the Global Methodist Church on Sunday. He will be with them.

Boyette said that he will no longer be a member of the United Methodist Church on May 1.

It is easier for clergy to leave the church than it is for them to stay. Boyette expects the ranks of the Global Methodist Church to grow over time, noting that some who want to join will wait until after the General Conference of the United Methodist Church in 2024.

Boyette was not happy with the actions of some members of the Council of Bishops. Some bishops are blocking certain processes for churches to leave the denomination.

The Global Methodist Church was supposed to launch after the next General Conference of the United Methodist Church. The only body that could approve the tentative agreement was the legislative body.

The General Conference was delayed for two years by the Pandemic. The next gathering was pushed back to 2024 due to long delays in the U.S. processing of visa applications. More than half of the members are overseas, including in Africa and the Philippines.

The United Methodist Church has more than 6 million members in the U.S.

At a conference in St. Louis, delegates voted to strengthen bans on LGBTQ-inclusive practices after years of differences over same-sex marriage and the ordination of LGBTQ clergy. Most U.S.-based delegates opposed that plan and favored LGBTQ-friendly options; they were outvoted by U.S. conservatives.

Many moderate and liberal clergy made clear they would not abide by the bans, and various groups worked on proposals to let the UMC split along theological lines.
