A former Idaho lawmaker was convicted of raping a 19-year-old legislative intern after a dramatic trial in which the young woman fled the witness stand.

The intern told a Statehouse supervisor that von Ehlinger raped her at his apartment after they had dinner. The sex was consensual.

von Ehlinger was a state representative from Lewiston.

Von Ehlinger was found guilty of rape. He was acquitted of sexual penetration with a foreign object.

This has been an unusual case attended by many unexpected circumstances, but I appreciate your attention and hard work.

July 28 is the date for sentencing.

Von Ehlinger sat calmly as the verdict was read. Von Ehlinger talked quietly with his attorney, who removed items from Von Ehlinger's pockets while he was in handcuffs.

The Associated Press does not identify people who say they have been sexually assaults, and has referred to the woman in this case as "Jane Doe" at her request.

The accuser abruptly left the witness stand.

He tried to put his fingers between my legs and I closed my knees.

She stood up.

She walked out of the courtroom quickly.

The judge gave the attorneys 10 minutes to find her and resume her testimony.

The judge told the jurors to strike Doe's testimony from their minds because the defense couldn't cross-examine her.

Von Ehlinger spoke directly to jurors, saying that he and the other person decided to return to his apartment after eating at a fancy restaurant. He said that they began making out on the couch.

Von Ehlinger asked Doe if she would like to move to the bedroom.

Deliberations went on for seven hours. The jury decided to break for the evening. The jury asked a question and the judge summoned the attorneys to his chambers. The jury's inquiry was not made public.

The legislative ethics investigation led to harassment from some von Ehlinger's supporters. Her name, photo and personal details about her life were made public. The man who harassed her was banned from the floor of the courthouse where the trial was being held.

The case used to be about power in the wrong hands, according to the deputy prosecutor. Von Ehlinger had a lot of power over the intern.

He used that power to rape and forcibly penetrate her. She said that the testimony of law enforcement investigators and a nurse sexual assault examiner who interviewed the woman after the alleged assault highlighted her resistance.

Words show lack of consent. Excuses show lack of consent. It shows lack of consent if you yank your head back and get an injury.

Jon Cox, von Ehlinger's defense attorney, told jurors that the prosecution's case was made up of red herrings and that von Ehlinger was a credible person who willingly took the stand to share his side of the story.

The nurse who performed the rape exam was heard by jurors earlier this week. They testified that von Ehlinger had placed a handgun on a drawer near the bed and pinned her down as he forced her to have sex. A nurse testified that the woman had aose egg on the back of her head as she tried to jerk her head away from von Ehlinger.
