Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ won’t be in the Barbie movie

The upcoming Barbie movie is sure to have some level of self-awareness about its main character's status as a real-world cultural icon, but that isn't enough for Mattel.

Warner Bros. shared a small tease of Gerwig's Barbie movie this week, which included a still image of the actress driving a dream car, and put the project at the back of people's minds. A number of fans began speculating what sort of music Barbie might feature, and Aqua's 1997 Hit, because of the bright, colorful, fun vibes the image gave off. Variety reports that people hoping to hear Barbie having a bit of a laugh at herself by acknowledging Aqua's song will be sorely disappointed.

It's a matter of fact that Lene is the manager to Aqua's lead singer. The Barbie brand and the company's marketing plans were damaged by the sexual implications of Aqua's song. The lower court dismissed the initial suit and the Supreme Court rejected the later appeal. The toy manufacturer's feelings about the song have not changed.

July 21st, 2023 is when Barbie will hit theaters.
