  • There is a dangerous form of hepatitis in Europe and the US.

  • The CDC has new information on how the illness started.

  • There are vague symptoms, including diarrhea and jaundice.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization are sharing new and striking details about the symptoms that children with a mysterious form of liver inflammation are experiencing as they get sick.

The CDC released a new report on the nine cases of adenoviruses-linked hepatitis that were seen at Children's of Alabama between October and February. Three of the patients had to have transplants. The majority of the patients were babies under the age of two.

Scientists at the WHO are concerned about the increase in cases of the disease and are looking at a similar outbreak in Europe. At least one child is dead and 10% of patients have required a transplant.

The majority of these children were previously healthy, and that is why this kind of severe hepatitis is unusual in them.

In North Carolina and Wisconsin, health authorities are reporting a possible death from unusual hepatitis.

Jaundice, a tell-tale sign the liver isn't working right, is a common symptom

Two of the first signs to be on alert for in little kids at home are:

If the disease progresses, caregivers may see tell-tale signs of jaundice.

  • Yellow eyes.

  • The skin is yellow.

There are reports of severe pediatric hepatitis in the US and Europe, but they are still very rare. The WHO said on Thursday that 170 cases have been counted so far.

The experts don't know what is causing the inflammation, but they suspect that the adenoviruses 41 may have something to do with it. At least seven of the nine children in Alabama tested positive for other viral pathogens, including the Epstein-Barr virus. None tested positive for the disease.

There is a possibility that the recent increase of COVID-19 infections in kids may be playing a role in this outbreak, by diminishing the ability of children to fight off other new pathogens as normal. Most of the children who have been sick are too young to bevaccinated, so experts say the COVID-19 vaccines have nothing to do with this.

Basic hygiene measures, including good, regular hand washing, and the same masking, distancing, and ventilation protocols recommended against COVID-19, are the best because viruses spread through close contact and from people accidentally putting poo in their mouths.
