It isn't the only social media company with smart glasses and an expanding hardware portfolio. Evan Spiegel, the CEO of Snap, spent some time explaining his decision to focus on experiences built for the real world instead of the virtual metaverse when he announced the new product, the $229 drones.

He told The Guardian that the reason why they don't use that word is because it is ambiguous and hypothetical.

“Just ask a room of people how to define it, and everyone’s definition is totally different.”

The companies making metaverse pitches are talking about something that doesn't exist yet.

While they don't agree on a lot of things, Mark and Spiegel agree on one thing. They are called the "holy grail" device and the "augmented reality" glasses will be a key to computing on the world around you. The first pair of real augmented reality glasses won't be available until at least 2024, while Spiegel already has a pair of Spectacles being tested.

He is spending billions of dollars on virtual reality headsets to power the metaverse. He calls it an "embodied internet" full of holograms and virtual board rooms that people will increasingly spend time in through headsets strapped to their faces. It is a vision of where the internet is going and how we interact with it.

Ultimately, people are going to spend most of their time in the world because it is a wonderful place.
