In the past 11 seasons, the Jags have lost at least 10 games in 10 of them. The second year in a row the Jags have had the No. 1 overall selection, they picked quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Walker played his best football in the College Football Playoff. He had 10 of his 29 pressures in the two games, including a season-high seven in Georgia's title game victory over Alabama. He had six sacks in each game, which was a career-high, after only 3.5 in his two previous seasons.
Walker played the majority of his snaps at defensive end last season and was a key part of the rush defense, which ranked second in the FBS in allowing only 2.6 yards per rush.
Walker ran the fastest 40-yard dash among all front-seven players at 4.51 seconds. He shot up teams' draft boards with his numbers, including a 35-inch vertical leap and 10-foot broad jump.
Walker should help the pass rush that was among the worst over the past two seasons. They had 50 sacks, which was less than every team except the Atlanta Falcons.
The Jaguars have the first and second overall picks in each of the last two years. The Cleveland Browns and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the only teams to do it twice. Two other teams have had back-to-back top picks: the Cincinnati Bengals and the Chicago Cardinals.
This is the 14th time in the past 15 years that the Jaguars have picked in the top 10 and the eighth time in the past 11 years that they have picked in the top five.
Only defensive lineman Tyson Alualu and quarterback Blake Bortles have second contracts with the club after being drafted in the top 10. Monroe, Gabbert, Fowler, Ramsey, and Henderson were traded. Leonard Fournette, a running back, and defensive end Derrick Harvey were cut, and wideout Justin Blackmon was suspended before the end of their rookies contracts. The rookies, offensive tackle Joeckel and defensive tackle Bryan, were not re-signed.
The fifth-year option on Josh Allen was exercised by the Jags.
