In the 11th congressional district of North Carolina, Cawthorn had just 38% support among Republican primary voters.

The GOPAC poll of the race last month had Cawthorn with a 49% support rate.

According to the poll, Cawthorn has a large lead over his opponent, but support for him went up between March and April.

The congressman's favorability rating fell from a high of 64% in March to a low of 51% this week, according to a poll.

The GOP primary will be held on May 17.

What To Watch For

If no candidates get over 30% of the vote, there will be a GOP primary. The top candidate captures the GOP nomination if the 30% threshold is hit.

Key Background

Over the past 10 days, Cawthorn has been accused of bringing a gun to an airport, being implicated in an alleged insider trading scheme, and being called a hypocrite by critics after leaked photographs showed the self-proclaimed traditional Christian drinking and wearing women's lingerie at a party. Before this stretch, Republican leaders were upset with Cawthorn. Kevin McCarthy told Cawthorn to turn himself around after he claimed D.C. political figures invited him to orgies and did cocaine in front of him. McCarthy said that Cawthorn admitted the allegations were exaggerated.

At a GOP event last summer, the congressman is a "handsome sucker" that has a good future, according to Donald Trump.

Surprising Fact

Cawthorn is the youngest member of Congress. Since 1964, the youngest person elected to Congress has been him.
