An executive for the American Civil Liberties Union testified Thursday in the defamation trial of Heard and Johnny Depp that he believes Musk paid only a small portion of the $3.5 million Heard promised the organization.
When they finalized their divorce, Heard agreed to donate half of the $7 million settlement to charity and the other half to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.
In a deposition, the general counsel and COO of the American Civil Liberties Union said that four donations were made in Heard's name: $350,000 directly from Heard, a $100,000 check from Johnny Depp, $500,000 from a fund and $350,000 from another fund.
The $500,000 payment is thought to have come from a fund linked to Musk and Heard.
According to Insider and Deadline, Heard never signed the pledge prepared for her by the organization after Musk sent an email on her behalf.
Heard was having financial difficulties when the American Civil Liberties Union expected another donation from her.
Heard wrote a piece for the Washington Post about women's rights at the American Civil Liberties Union.
Heard described herself as a public figure representing domestic abuse, even though the article did not mention her name. Heard filed a temporary restraining order against the EdwardScissorhands actor after she said he had abused her. The restraining order was dropped and when their divorce was finalized the couple released a statement saying neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. He sued Heard for defamation and The Sun for libel, and a judge ruled in favor of The Sun in 2020. Heard had a $100 million countersuit against Depp. Heard was accused of being the abusive in the relationship by Johnny Depp.
A video deposition from Christian Carino, a talent agent who represented both Johnny Depp and Heard, was played in court. During his testimony, Carino read a text exchange between him and Heard about the break up of Musk and Heard.
