President Biden claimed at the Teacher of the Year ceremony that school children don't belong to parents when they're in the classroom.

They are all our children. You recognize that is the reason you are the teachers of the year. They are not children of somebody else. He said that they were like yours when they were in the classroom.

Biden targeted Republicans and the parent movements in local school districts that have fought to remove from libraries and curricula books that promote radical gender and racial ideologies.

There are too many politicians trying to score political points by banning books. Did you think when you were teaching that you would be worried about book burnings and banning books because it doesn't fit someone's political agenda?

The comments struck a similar tone to the one made by Terry McAuliffe, when he made his now infamous remark that parents should not be involved in public education. He said at a debate that he wouldn't allow parents to come into schools and take books out. I don't think parents should be telling schools what to teach.

Glenn Youngkin, now governor of Virginia, countered with: "You believe school systems should tell children what to do." Since Youngkin's victory in the state, multiple Republicans have followed his model of making parental rights a priority and crafting legislation along those lines.

The Parental Rights in Education law was signed by Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis, who wanted parents to decide how and when to teach their children about sensitive topics.

Moderates have been persuaded by the parental-choice rhetoric, which has angered many progressives. Last week, MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace compared parental-rights legislation to the war tactics of Russians, who get their soldiers to rape children by dehumanizing them.

A recent survey found that most Americans and Florida residents support the Parental Rights in Education law.
