J.D. Davis left the game in the top of the eighth after being hit in the left foot by a pitch from Genesis Cabrera, the major-league leading 19th hit by pitch for the Mets this season.

Arenado yelled for Lopez to "do it again" after he hit a 94 mph pitch near his head.

Stubby Clapp tackled Pete Alonso at the center of the melee. Adam asked Alonso if he was all right.

Clapp and Arenado were ejected, but Lopez remained in the game.

Lopez was high-fived by his teammates when he came back to the bench.

Mets manager Buck Showalter denied after the game that New York felt the need to send a message about the plunkings and said Lopez's pitch wasn't intentional.

X-rays on Davis' foot were negative, but Showalter said he would need further evaluation.

Chris Bassitt blamed inconsistencies in baseballs provided by the league for the Mets' anger over hit batters, a year after Major League Baseball cracked down on the use of illegal sticky substances by pitchers.

The league is concerned about keeping hitters safe from dangerous pitches.

Statistics show hit-by-pitch rates and wild pitch rates are down compared to previous seasons. One club has been hit more than the league average has so far, which is something we will keep an eye on.
