The Duke of York was stripped of his Freedom of the City of York honor on Wednesday, three months after he settled his sex assault lawsuit.
The Freedom of the City of York honor, anambassadorial title, bestowed on those who represent the very best of York, was given to Andrew in 1987.
The vote was unanimous with two abstaining.
If Andrew fails to give up his title as the Duke of York, the Royal family will have to remove his title.
The Duke of York title would need to be removed in order for it to happen, according to The Independent.
Andrew did not admit to any wrongdoing when he settled the civil suit.
York's unique connection to the crown and the monarch is an important part of the city's history. Smalley told The Independent before the vote that the council and city stand with victims of sexual abuse and are doing all they can to end violence against women and girls.
In January, Andrew was stripped of his military affiliations and royal patronages with the approval of his mother, Queen Elizabeth. Buckingham Palace said he would stop using the name His Royal Highness. Giuffre settled her sex abuse lawsuit with Andrew after accusing him of assault. In December of last year, Maxwell was found guilty of sex trafficking and other charges, and in January of this year, Epstein died in prison.
The queen accompanied Andrew to a memorial service for his father, Prince Philip, last month, despite Andrew stepping down from his royal duties in 2019. He was stripped of his patronages and settled the lawsuit.
