The Club for Growth is sticking with its pick in Ohio's messy GOP Senate primary despite attacks from top Trump allies.

The anti-tax organization, which is supporting Josh Mandel in the contest, has begun airing a new ad taking direct aim at former President Trump. Despite his previous criticism of Trump, Trump backed the author of Hillbilly Elegy.

The actors in the new ad are portraying voters in Ohio. Republicans who refused to support Trump in 2016 and 2020 used a label called "Never Trump guy", which was used by Vance. In another, he suggests that he might vote for Hillary Clinton.

Interesting move: Josh Mandel’s backer, the Club for Growth, is now explicitly whacking Trump in their TV ads over his endorsement of JD Vance and even his endorsement of Mitt Romney (!) in 2012. pic.twitter.com/87F2tE16hw

One actor in the ad asked if Trump had seen the footage after viewing it.

Another person says that they have their own eyes and ears.

Romney, a Republican senator from Utah, has since emerged as a reference to the ad's reference to Trump's support of Romney.

Another actor says that Trump is getting it wrong with J.D. Vance.

It is not the first Club for Growth ad to highlight his past statements. They were asked to stop airing the ads by Trump, who called them offensive and idiot.

The Club for Growth spent more than 70 million dollars on Republican candidates in the 2020 election and has already raised $38 million for the next election. For his part, Vance is a regular guest on Tucker Carlson's Fox News program and has become a stalwart Trump supporter in recent years.

According to the New York Times, when the attacks continued, Trump had an assistant send a text message to the president of the Club, which was an angry and expletive-laden text message.

The group was buying more ad time in support of Mandel. Donald Trump, Jr. has attacked both Mandel and the Club for Growth many times.

Donald Trump Jr. posted on April 21, 2022.

The Club for Growth was against Trump in the Republican presidential primaries, but he won the presidency and they supported his reelection effort in 2020. Trump and the Club are backing many of the same candidates in Republican primaries this year, according to the Times.

He told the paper that he views this race as one where we are not aligned and we are on opposite sides.

In the crowded Ohio primary, Trump's endorsement appears to be paying off, with a number of other candidates in addition to Mandel. According to a Fox News poll released Tuesday, Vance has the lead with 23% of the vote compared to Mandel's 18%.

The primary will be held on May 3. Tim Ryan is expected to be the Democratic nominee.

In 2016 and 2020, Trump won Ohio by eight points. According to the Cook Political Report, the Republican nominee will have an advantage in the general election.

Many Republicans in Ohio who are supporting other candidates in the race to replace Rob Portman were upset by the April 15 endorsement of Trump. The former president explained his endorsement at a Saturday night rally.

I don't think I would have done that if I went by that standard.
