Dylan Lesko, the top pitching prospect in the MLB draft, had Tommy John surgery Tuesday, according to a source.
Lesko had the procedure done by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the head team physician for the Dodgers and the Rams, according to a source.
Should Lesko not sign out of the draft this year, he will be a Commodore. He has a good chance of being the first pitcher drafted and/or getting the highest bonus among pitchers in the draft due to a weak pitching class this year.
The MLB draft will be held in Los Angeles.
In 2012 the top prep pitcher in the draft class, Lucas Giolito, was shut down before the draft due to an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. He had the procedure after one pro appearance, after going 16th overall to the Washington Nationals. The eighth-highest bonus in the draft that year was the $3 million signed by Giolito.
It has been a bad year for pitcher health. Of the seven pitchers ranked among the top 32 players in this year's draft class, two of them are coming back from surgery.
Arkansas righty Peyton Pallette and Connecticut lefty Reggie Crawford were both projected to go in the first round before having their surgeries, while Mississippi State righty Landon Sims and Texas prep righty ColePhillips were both projected to go in the first round before having their surgeries. Hunter Barco is out indefinitely with an elbow injury.
Duke pitcher Henry Williams and Oregon State pitcher Will Frisch had Tommy John surgery this spring.
