One of the most diverse crews sent to space was sent to the International Space Station early Wednesday when four astronauts were successfully launched.
The Crew-4 mission was launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center at 3:52 a.m. The crew of the Dragon capsule were propelled by a partially reused Falcon 9 two-stage rocket.
The crewed capsule was able to enter space after the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket returned to Earth.
The astronauts will spend around 17 hours on their way to the International Space Station and are expected to land there at around 8:15 p.m. Time.
Two men and two women are part of the crew.
Watkins was the first black woman to participate in a long-term space mission.
Wednesday's launch is the fourth by the company under its contract with NASA.
The commander of the mission said a thank you before the launch. Lindren radioed back: "It was a great ride."
The new crew will be welcomed on board by seven astronauts currently living in the International Space Station, including three Americans and a German. The crew of Crew 3 will return to Earth in a Dragon capsule. A private mission to the International Space Station was carried out by the firm Axiom Space. The mission featured a former NASA Astronaut and three others who paid $55 million for the trip. The crew of the Axiom-1 agreed to conduct experiments on the station and help develop protocols for launching private individuals into space in the future.
During NASA's Space Shuttle-era, there were only two black women who visited the International Space Station. Watkins is going to be the first person to spend five months on the space station and she says it is an important milestone.
After a private flight, four astronauts are for NASA.
