A former US official told Insider that President Joe Biden's pick for ambassador to Saudi Arabia will likely be a disappointment.

Last Friday, Biden nominated Michael Ratney to the post, following the departure of Gen. John Abizaid, a former head of US Central Command.

The nomination comes at a low point in US-Saudi relations, with Biden clearly distanced himself from the country and Crown Prince Mohammed trying to punish him back.

The Insider of Ratney spoke to David Schenker, who served as assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department from January to January 2021.

We have seen a lot of stresses in the relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia and this is not going to help.

Most US ambassadors to Saudi Arabia have been political appointees, like Abizaid.

The former ambassadors include Joseph Westphal, the former under secretary of the US Army, and James Smith, a former executive with the Raytheon arms manufacturer.

Ratney is the first foreign-service officer to be in line for the post since 1989.

Ratney's appointment may offend Saudi Arabia. The US sells millions of dollars of arms to the Saudis every year and has a major military base in Riyadh. Ratney's selection could show that Biden isn't as concerned with Saudi Arabia's security as his predecessors.

The Saudi ambassador to the US is often filled with leading figures, such as Khalid bin Salman, the brother of the current ambassador, and Princess Reema bint Bandar, the cousin of the current ambassador. The same type of profile would be expected from Riyadh.

The nomination of Ratney comes at a tense time for the Saudi-US partnership.

The US supported the Saudi-led war in Yemen, despite the Biden administration's admonishment of the widespread human-rights abuses.

According to reports, MBS ignored Biden's phone calls and US requests to boost oil production, and said he doesn't care what Biden thinks of him.

Saudi Arabia expects the US to guarantee its security and is irked by the weak US response to attacks from the Iran-backed Houthi rebels on the Arabian Peninsula.

Policy experts praised Ratney after the announcement.

If anyone can navigate the mess that is US-Saudi ties, it is Ratney. He will give an honest assessment of US- Saudi interests and values. A senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said what Biden does is another matter.

Ratney is the dean of the Foreign Service Institute language program. He was the deputy assistant secretary for the Levant and Israel-Palestinian Affairs at the State Department.
