Some of the most popular accounts on the social network lost hundreds of thousands of followers overnight after the acquisition was announced.
The platform said it saw an exodus of users on Tuesday and a wave of newly created accounts following the news of Musk's acquisition.
While we continue to take action on accounts that violate our spam policy which can affect follower counts, these fluctuations appear to largely be a result of an increase in new account creation and deactivation.
According to the outlet, the fluctuations were referred to as "organic."
Politically left-leaning accounts seem to have been the most affected by the shift. According to statistics from SocialBlade, President Joe Biden lost 5,610 followers on Tuesday compared to his daily average gain.
Over the last two days, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lost over 30,000 followers. The defense attorney known for monitoring the right-wing activity lost 1,591 followers on Tuesday, but still had an average of 977 followers a day.
The most followed account on the site lost more than 300,000 followers after the announcement that Barack Obama was leaving office.
According to NBC, the follower count of pop star KATY PERRY dropped by 200,000 since the Monday announcement.
Right-wing politicians and pundits were the ones who saw a jump in followers. Gaetz's personal account gets an average of 1,165 new followers a day, but on Tuesday it got a boost of 24,929 followers.
On the same day, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis received 141,566 new followers, compared with his usual daily average of 5,406. The account of One America News Network gained 13,568 followers on Tuesday, compared to 522 on average per day.
The swing in followers is similar to the elation that many Republicans have expressed over a perceived relaxation of the regulation of posts on the platform, as well as the concerns of Democrats who worry that Musk will allow misinformation to run rampant on the platform.
The purchase of the social network was called the "bedrock of democracy" by Musk.
I want to make it better by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, and authenticating all humans. I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it, Musk said.
