  • There is a link between the environment and human lungs.

  • People with vulnerable immune systems can get lung infections from environmental mold.

  • Drug resistance from molds has made it more difficult to treat infections.

Drug-resistant mold infections originate from gardens, homes, and farms and are causing life-threatening illness in humans, according to researchers at Imperial College London.

The average person knows how to recognize and clear mold in the air.

The Imperial study found that exposure to agricultural fungicides was a likely factor in the rise of drug-resistant mold.

Johanna Rhodes, a genomic epidemiology fellow at Imperial, told Insider that gradual exposure to the environment can lead to drug resistance.

It is like building up a tan gradually, according to the study's lead author.

One of the first studies to show that people can catch drug-resistant fungal infections from their everyday environments.

Rhodes and her team collected and analyzed more than 100 Aspergillus samples from patients in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland between 2005 and 2017. They compared the mold samples from those patients with those from other patients.

For some patients, the samples of Aspergillus taken from the lungs were almost identical to the ones found in nearby soil or other environmental sources. In six separate cases, drug-resistant aspergillosis infections could be traced back to the patient.

Fungi are evolving drug resistance

Drug-resistant mold strains are on the rise and researchers like Rhodes are interested in tracking them.

According to the estimates cited in the study, 20 million people around the world are sick from infections with normal Aspergillus. A class of drugs called azoles are usually used to treat the infection.

Almost half of the samples were resistant to at least one first-line antifungal drug, and more than 10% of samples had evolved resistance to two or more azole drugs.

Although drug resistance can emerge during treatment in hospital settings, the authors concluded that the fungi in question developed resistance before it entered any human lungs and pointed them to agricultural fungicides.

Patients with compromised immune systems can be at risk of being killed by anti-fungal resistance. Studies have shown a 25% increase in mortality in infections with drug-resistant Aspergillus compared to those with typical, treatable Aspergillus infections.

How to avoid mold inhalation in your home and in your garden

Aspergillus thrives in decaying environments. mold can become airborne and spread to new environments if soil beds, compost bins, and decaying wood are not hospitable.

Rhodes said that drug-resistant Aspergillus is virtually everywhere because it can move through the air and transfer genetic material to wild colonies that have never encountered azoles.

The risk of exposure is so high that the authors are calling for better monitoring of drug-resistant strains of fungus.

Rhodes recommended leaving windows open to prevent a build up of Aspergillus in the home, as well as to clear out other pathogens like the coronaviruses. N95 face masks can be used for avoiding the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
