Russian energy giant Gazprom told Poland's main natural gas supplier it will stop all gas flows to the country on Wednesday, the company said Tuesday, a month after Poland and many other countries rejected Russia's demand to pay for gas in rubles.
Poland was told on Tuesday that it had to pay in Russian currency for gas supplies, according to the Polish Prime Minister.
Russia might try to punish Poland by stopping deliveries, which it has criticized for invading Ukraine.
The contract with Russia will end at the end of the year, and the company will look for alternate suppliers of gas.
Poland's gas supplies are secure, and there will be no shortage of gas in Polish homes, according to the Minister of Climate and Environment.
According to the Forum Energii, Poland relies on Russian imports for almost half of its gas supplies. The Polish government has been critical of Russia. European countries have been urged to ban all imports of Russian gas, oil and coal by Morawiecki by the end of the year. Poland said Tuesday it would impose sanctions on 50 Russian companies. It comes a month after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that countries would be forced to pay for Russian gas in rubles, which a number of European countries, including Poland, have said they will not do.
