Christine Bronstein blamed hemorrhoids for the blood in her stool last fall. The founder of the social network A Band of Wives eats well, avoids sugar, and doesn't drink alcohol, so she didn't think about it

In January, Bronstein took an at- home colon cancer test and the result came back positive. Her primary care doctor was not concerned. He told her that she didn't have cancer.

A publisher who lives in Hawaii with her journalist husband pushed for a colonoscopy anyway. She was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and a small tumor in her rectum. She had two small tumors removed that could have been cancer.

I would have waited until 50 to take the Let's Get Checked home test if I had not done it. The new 50 is for colorectal cancer screening. Cancer is frightening. I am so thankful for my family and all those who have supported me.

Doctors hope that the cancer will be small enough to be removed by June. She is speaking out to raise awareness of colorectal cancer, which is the least funded cancer.

She wrote in another post that the disease disproportionately affects Black and Jewish people and that it could be slowed by catching them as polyps before they turn into cancer.

Colon cancer is on the rise in younger people

Over the past three decades, research has shown a rise in colon cancer and related illnesses among younger people.

Older people are more likely to develop colon cancer. Insider previously reported that people under 50 are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced forms of the disease.

Four years after a stage three colon cancer diagnosis, actor Chadwick Boseman died of colon cancer-related causes. He was 43 years old.

The symptoms of bowel cancer are difficult to diagnose because they are common with other diseases. Many people under 50 are not offered routine testing in the US.

According to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer can be treated if it is caught early.

Other young people have reported doctors dismissing their colon cancer symptoms

Some patients have reported that their doctors brushed off their symptoms as well.

When she complained of severe stomach pain and weight loss, a gastroenterologist shamed her.

She told Today Health that he was praising the fact that she was not eating.

She was diagnosed with stage 3A colon cancer when she went to another provider for a colonoscopy. She shared her story on TikTok and said that they could not gaslight her.
