The news is tragic. Lauren Bernett, a softball player at James Madison University, has died, the school announced. She was 20 years old. In a statement announcing the sad news Tuesday morning, JMU officials did not reveal a cause of death. Our hearts are broken, hearing of the loss of one of our student-athletes. Lauren is a member of the JMU athletics community and will always consider herself to be a Duke. We will miss her. Bernett was a star catcher for the Dukes and had just had her best week on the diamond. She had three hits and seven runs in a game against College of Charleston. She had hits in seven of her nine at-bats in the series against Drexel. She received the Player of the Week award from the CAA. Bernett, who was batting.336 this season with nine home runs, was also a key contributor to the James Madison squad that made a deep run in the College World Series. The JMU softball team said in a statement that they loved Lauren. The team canceled its Wednesday game in the wake of Bernett's death. I am sad.
