Russia was stripped of hosting rights for the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

The news was announced at the Council meeting. The marquee showcase of the tournament was to be held in Saint Petersburg, but the arena was not built in time.

The IIHF event was removed from Russia because of the invasion of Ukraine. Russia was supposed to host the World Junior Championship in 2023, but was banned from international play in February because of the invasion.

The decision to relocate the event was taken out of concern for the safety and well-being of all participating players, officials, media and fans.

During the final week of the World Championship that runs from May 13 to May 29 in Tampere, Finland, an alternate host for the 2023 championship will be revealed.
