Jay Wright gets choked up over retirement (1:37)

Jay Wright talked about leaving college basketball. 1:45.

Less than a week after retiring as head coach of the University of Pennsylvania, Jay Wright is leaving the door open to one day coaching in the NBA.

If he said he hadn't thought, I would be lying, Wright said on Tuesday.

Not right now. That was something I always thought about, and my experience with the Olympics made me think about it more. I think I did it a little bit. I enjoyed coaching those guys.

Wright was part of the Team USA staff that included Popovich, Kerr and Udoka.

Wright said Tuesday that he needs a break and that he is looking forward to his new position. I don't know what I'm going to feel like down the road.

It was a shock when Wright announced last Wednesday that he was retiring after 21 seasons as the men's basketball coach at the school.

Wright said he didn't have the same passion to continue as the head coach.

I know I made the right decision, but I don't think I will be able to do the things I need to do to keep this program at a high level. I didn't want to be the coach at Villanova and not be 100% in.

Wright is going to work as a special assistant to the university president. He had been the coach for a long time. He made four Final Four appearances and won two national titles. He was a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.

Kyle Neptune spent 10 years under Wright as a video assistant and an assistant coach.
