You can read about the first 15 minutes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Phil Lord and Chris Miller showed up at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week to give theater owners a glimpse of what's in store for Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, Miguel O'Hara and Jessica Drew. We saw and described the opening two scenes of the film. It was also revealed that Across the Spider-Verse is the title for part one, and part two is not a part two. It is called Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. We have a trilogy coming. There are more characters in this one than in the first one, and it takes place in six dimensions, instead of the one in the first movie. 1000 people are working on the biggest animated film ever.
Across the Spider-Verse opens on Earth 65. It's impossible to tell what it will look like when it's done because most of the footage was unfinished. Earth 65 seemed to have a very artistic quality. Someone dragged a brush across the background. That was the vibe I got.
Gwen coming home opens things up in that aesthetic. Her dad is excited to tell her that he thinks he's had a break in the Spider-Woman case, and he is doing the dishes. He's a police officer, just like his father, and he's looking for his child. Gwen pretended to be interested in Dad when he got a call about a possible supervillain event at the Guggenheim Museum. He told her that they might catch her at this time. Adrian Tooms has taken hostages inside the Museum. The Vulture is a little different. The cops don't know what he wants because he speaks Italian. Gwen's dad is about to go into the museum when a bunch of webs grab him and pull him back. Gwen jokes before flying into the museum.
Gwen and Vulture are fighting. He is covered in armor that makes him look like a gladiator, like the final armor in Wonder Woman 1984. As they fight, he starts to do the flashy phase thing that happened in the last movie and Gwen begins to realize that he is from another world. She is hit to the ground, grabbed, and then unleashed five massive claws. He is about to kill her when a bunch of webs catch his hand. The screen tells us that he is from Earth-928. She starts joking with him after he saved Gwen. She jokes that he is like a big black cat and asks if he wants some food.
The joking goes on for too long. It is him against Gwen and Miguel. As they fight, he explains that he is mad at her for what happened. Gwen thinks that they saved the Multiverse, but Miguel thinks that they actually opened a hole in the multiverse so big that people are crossing over more frequently. As this is happening, Vulture is winning. "Maybe he should call for help," joked the personal assistant. Miguel wasgrudgingly agreed to which Lyla said, "I already did."
Jessica Drew is played by Issa Rae. Gwen is excited to see another Spider-Woman because she is riding a motorcycle. Especially one that is pregnant. Jessica says five months. Gwen asks if she will adopt her. Jessica says that maybe they should ask for Gwen's help. She knows why he can't do that, but we don't know what he's talking about. The police helicopter isn't sure who the bad guy is in the fight that flies up and outside of the museum. The helicopter begins to fall after the battle is over. Gwen uses her spider sense to stop the fall. He flies through the cockpit to save the pilots. The helicopter stops before it hits the ground thanks to Jessica. The hostages were saved after vulture was captured.
There is a POV of another character creeping up on Gwen. Her dad is it. He told her that she was under arrest. He wants her to lay on the ground, so she isn't sure which to do. Gwen stays until she knows there is only one option. She is taking off her mask.
Dad is not doing well. He can't believe it. She said she wanted to tell him before but couldn't. She asked if he thought she was a murderer. He began to read her Miranda Rights after a few beats. Gwen is shocked. Crying. She asked if he was really afraid of her. Just as he was about to arrest her, Miguel caught him.
Jessica says that they can leave her here. Gwen tells them she doesn't know what to do, and they leave when Miguel throws his multiverse wristband at her.
Cut to Brooklyn, NY. This is the world of Miles. It looks like the world of the first movie. The parents are waiting for him at school but he is late. He is no longer being Spider-Man. As the parents and teacher wait, we see him flying around the city. He got back to his room and said "Face" to his roommate. Miles runs through the hallways and crawls on the ceilings to get to the meeting. Rakim's song "Guess Who's Back" is playing on the soundtrack.
The teacher is going over his grades as Miles arrives at the conference. A in physics, art, and English and a B in Spanish are included. His mother, Rio, is angry at the last one because he missed a few classes, which makes her even madder. The teacher thinks that Miles is a kid who needs to tell his story. Columbia University is one of the finest science schools in the world. This is news to Mom.
In Manhattan? Rio says that it's too far. He explains why he wants to go to Manhattan because he doesn't think it's too far. Columbia has the best quantum researchers on the planet. They are studying dark matter, and might be able to travel to different dimensions. Jefferson jokes that it sounds like a fake job.
This is the special thing that I want to do. There are people who can teach him how to do it, but they are not in Brooklyn. Miles feels spider-senses. He excused himself from the meeting. He says yes and leaves after Mom asks if he ordered the cake. We don't know what that means. Dad gets a message on his radio about a potential event, and he has to leave too. The teacher says that the boy is lying.
What is he telling the truth about? Who is coming through to him? Who else is in this movie? We don't know. The footage ended there. Beyond our description, the dialogue and exchanges are funnier and more dynamic. The moment with Gwen's dad was devastatingly sad. The June 2023 release date can't come soon enough.
