The Bored Ape Yacht Club's account was hacked on Monday. According to BAYC, the hacker used the access to launch a scam that stole millions of dollars from the account's followers.

BAYC, run by the criptocurrency company Yuga Labs, warned community members to steer clear of the scheme after revealing what had happened on the internet. A BAYC spokesman confirmed the incident in an email to Gizmodo.

The compromised account was used by the hacker to direct community members to a fake website. There was a fake airdrop advertised. Airdrops are a type of marketing in which companies give out new coins for free to community members. The hacker encouraged users to connect their MetaMask coins to the site, and claimed to be offering access to an upcoming project. The site took the digital assets out of the users wallet and put them in the hacker's wallet.

Some 134 NFTs appear to have been transferred to the hacker's wallet on Monday morning, a number of which were Bored Ape assets.

The estimated losses due to the scam are 4 Bored Apes, 6 Mutant Apes, and 3 BAKC, as well as assorted other NFTs estimated at a total value of $3m.
