  • The F-35 is being bought by more and more European militaries.

  • The arrival of the F-35 means that pilots in the air forces have to learn how to fly it.

  • That isn't an easy change for pilots used to Soviet-made jets.

The F-35 is becoming the fighter jet of choice for many European air forces due to its technological and operational advantages.

Eight European countries have placed orders for the fifth-generation fighter jet. More countries are talking about acquiring the jet.

More pilots will have to learn to fly the jet, but the technological superiority of the F-35 means some pilots will not be able to make the change.

A generational jump

Only Bulgaria, Poland, and Slovakia still operate Soviet-era aircraft.

Poland has the most operational MiG-29s and Su-22s. Poland's combat fleet is made up of 36 US-made F-16s. Warsaw has an option to buy 16 more F-35As after it ordered 32 in 2020.

Poland has a political history of being a member of the Warsaw Pact during the Cold War and is now a member of NATO and the EU.

The mix will make it harder for Poland to integrate the F-35 into its fleet, according to a former Canadian air force lieutenant colonel and senior F-35 test pilot.

Flynn explained in an interview with the Aviationist how Polish pilots will struggle to move between different aircraft.

Flynn said that the Polish Air Force pilots don't cross between the Western and Russian F-16s.

Flynn said any pilot would have to leap in transition to the F-35, one of only four fifth- generation jets in operation around the world.

F-16 pilots in the Polish Air Force would be able to transition to the newer jet, as many pilots in other air forces with the F-35 have done, but the Polish Air Force's pilots won't.

Flynn said that asking a very capable pilot to transition to the F-35 is too much.

Differences in mentality

The capabilities of the F-16 and the MiG-29 are the same.

The F-16 is a multi-role aircraft, but it is also a fourth-generation fighter. The Soviet jet was built in response to the American jets.

It takes more than learning new capabilities to transition from the Soviet jet to the US fighters. Flynn says that a transition to a totally different design philosophy is practically impossible.

Flynn told the Aviationist that every part of how we mechanize the aircraft in the West is different from how Russians design their aircraft.

Flynn said that it was easier for an F-16 pilot to switch to the F-35 as the stealth fighter was a logical step forward.

To say to an F-16 pilot that we build the aircraft in a certain way, and switch to a different way, and now we will give you the next generation of that, there.

The last of their kind

The inability of the pilots to make the jump to the new era is a sign that their aircraft is nearing obsolescence.

Poland, Bulgaria, and Slovakia are struggling to keep up with the times. As relations with Russia have deteriorated, the last three NATO MiG-29 operators are slowly phasing out the aircraft, but Poland has maintained its contingent on par with its F-16.

Flynn said that the Polish MiG corps will end up spending their time in the jet until the jet is phased out.

There is no place for the MiG-29 pilots in the sophisticated world of fifth- generation aircraft with the embrace of the F-35 and other advanced jets.
