Facebook/Chuck Basye State Representative

Nedra Jeffress, a retired teacher from Independence, Missouri, wrote a letter to state Rep. Chuck Basye, a Republican who is pushing to ban trans girls from school sports.

I am wondering if there is data that supports the need for bills regulating this in Missouri or if this is a solution for a problem. Acceptance is important to their well-being if they are able to participate on an athletic team. I would like to see you sponsor bills that support positive mental health for every citizen of the state of Missouri, instead of attacking a population already at risk. She said thank you for your time.

She received a much less respectful reply the next morning.

Nedra, do your own research. I don't care about your feelings or your resume.

My goal is to keep women's sports for the female gender.

If a person was born with a penis, they don't belong in sports designed for females.

Go ahead and have your temper tantrum. Let's go Brandon!

Was this a joke or a parody? Is it rude for an elected official to answer a question rudely?

We asked Basye if he had really responded this way to the person.

He wrote back to say that he had written the message, but that he was not a member of our management database. The statement speaks for itself.

Whether she lives and votes in his district isn't the point, and that she can't vote either for or against him doesn't make his incivility any more acceptable.

Jeffress, who taught in Independence for 29 years, and now works part-time as a middle school graduation coach, said she waited a full week before sending us what he had written to her.

She decided to make his comments public because they were wrong with politics and the personal attacks.

She has written to other officials who she disagreed with. This is the only time I have ever received a response like this.

Today's fundraising opportunities are the result of yesterday's lapse. Basye still owes Jeffress an apology.
