  • Johnny Depp was questioned about the end of Pirates of the Caribbean.

  • He was dropped from the franchise.

  • I planned on continuing until it was time to stop, he testified.

Johnny Depp testified Monday in a Virginia court that he had plans to conclude the Pirates of the Caribbean film series before he was dropped from the franchise by Disney.

Captain Jack Sparrow is a dangerous pirate who is known for his powers of persuasion.

The actor spoke about his disappointment that the series ended abruptly on the stand, as part of his defamation suit against his ex-wife. She was accused of ruining his reputation and career by saying in a Washington Post op-ed that she was a victim of domestic violence. Heard denied the claims in the lawsuit that she was abused multiple times throughout their relationship.

Variety reported last week that Johnny Depp said that Disney dropped him from the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie days after the Post published Heard's op-ed. Variety reported last week that Heard's attorney asked if the actor had been fired from the franchise before the op-ed ran. The case was not clarified in court.

A franchise can last a long time. The actor said that the characters should have a way out to end the franchise on a good note. I was going to continue until it was time to stop.

The film has not been made and is currently in a state of disrepair.

During Monday's testimony, Depp spoke about how he was disappointed at Disney at the end of the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.

Captain Jack Sparrow was a character that I had built from the ground up, and was something that I put a lot of myself into.

After working with those people and putting a lot of my own rewrites, dialogue, scenes, and jokes in those films, I didn't understand how.

Insider reached out to a Disney rep, but didn't hear back.

Two or three days after Heard's Post op-ed was published, Disney decided not to re-cast him in Pirates of the Caribbean. He testified that the article left him shocked.

It had been a long time since the allegations had been planted on my back. I had to carry it with me. He said that he couldn't believe it was continuing in such a way.

It was clear that the more bad press, the more hit pieces that came out on me, the more stories of Ms. Heard and her righteous chase against me. It becomes difficult to swallow once you have chewed on it for a couple of years.

In November 2020, the publisher of the British tabloid The Sun lost a libel case against the actor over a headline that called him a wife-beater. They settled out of court.
