The company announced on Monday that it is investing $1 million in its Community Funds program. For the past six months, the company has been experimenting with its Community Funds program, which provides financial support to help Reddit users bring their ideas for events and projects to life. 13 projects that were nominated by communities on its platform were funded throughout the experiment. A community-designed musical artist billboard in Times Square and a digital conference for history buffs were among the 13 projects.
The Community Funds will be made official with this new $1 million investment, in order to create more opportunities for its users. In June, communities will be invited to submit ideas for projects, events, contests and more. Nominees will be accepted for projects that need between $1,000 and $50,000 in funding. The projects will be selected based on their creativity, feasibility and community impact. There will be more details and guidelines in the future.
We want to foster more opportunities for connection by making Community Funds official, with $1 million in funding. One way we can empower communities to do more is by awarding funds to support their best ideas.
As part of the experiment, Reddit gave money to fund a photography competition and a comic-creation competition. 25 children whose families were facing financial hardship were given a gift of $5,000 by the company. A nomination-based gifting event for r/pan streamers was funded by Reddit.
It's worth noting that Facebook launched a community fund in 2020 to provide funding to support local communities.
The announcement comes a few weeks after the introduction of the ability to search comments on the site. Users don't have to click on several comments to find threads when looking for a particular conversation with a new comment search function. The search bar now has a new COMMENTS tab, which allows you to search for comments directly. User feedback on both desktop and mobile led to a simpler design for search results.
