Ben Simmons reportedly took a step toward figuring out when he will be able to play for the Brooklyn Nets on Monday.
Simmons and his agent Rich Paul met with Nets general manager Sean Marks and team leadership to discuss how they will work through the physical and mental hurdles to get Simmons back in the lineup.
Simmons will not be in the lineup for Game 4 as he continues to recover from his back injury. Simmons was supposed to return in the contest, but it was decided that he wouldn't be able to. The Nets are in danger of being swept at home.
Brooklyn acquired Simmons in February as part of the blockbuster deal that sent James Harden to Philadelphia. Simmons requested to be traded from Philadelphia at the beginning of the year, but it took months for a deal to happen. He took time away from the team to address his mental health. Simmons has not played in an NBA game since Philadelphia was eliminated from the playoffs.
Simmons has been criticized for his time away from the court, but there is more going on behind the scenes. Simmons has a desire to play for the Nets, but more issues need to be addressed beyond his injury rehabilitation.
Both groups believe Simmons had two good weeks of physical ramp-up through Sunday, but ultimately realized there are still mental and physical hurdles that need addressing.
The Nets believe that Simmons has already taken the time to work through his mental and physical obstacles, but that both sides are aware that there is more work to be done.
Simmons is unlikely to play this year if Brooklyn's season ends on Monday or later in the playoffs.
