An extremely cloaked Darth Maul watches a silver spaceship fly away from sandy Tatooine.

A month ago, a rumor swirled around the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ show that the Jedi's oldest foe, Darth Maul, had originally been planned to be a part of the series. It was an odd rumor, because we already heard about the show and because the story of the Obi-Wan/Maul character had already been wrapped up in the Star Wars: Rebels TV show. Apparently, it was also false.

The rumor came from a Hollywood Reporter story where sources stated that Deborah Chow, the director of Kenobi, had pitched a Maul-centered storyline for the series, along with a young Luke playing a larger role as well, before Star Wars TV shepherds Jon and Dave Filoni nixed it for In the newest issue of Total Film magazine, Deborah Chow said that the show was never in the plan, despite earlier reports to the contrary.

It never made sense that Obi-Wan would have more than a few seconds of screentime with a man who doesn't recognize him in A New Hope. It was not right for Filoni to mess with the story he told through Clone Wars and Rebels, which culminated in what is arguably the greatest moment in the franchise's animated canon. Since the Kenobi series is set before the Rebels, giving the two characters another story would probably not add anything, but it would have a chance to diminish the impact of their final battle.

It is also a risk that Obi-Wan Kenobi runs in regards to the Jedi's final fight with Darth Vader. The Disney+ series will premiere on May 25.
