North Dakota's longest-serving state senator announced Monday that he would resign after it was reported that he had traded text messages with a man jailed on child pornography charges.

Republican Ray Holmberg, who rose to become one of the state's most powerful lawmakers in a career that spanned 46 years, said he would resign in June. 1. His term was due to end in November, but he already announced that it would be his last.

The recent news stories have become a distraction for the legislative assembly during its interim meetings, according to a statement announcing his resignation.

He didn't return messages from The Associated Press.

Burgam said in a statement that he supports the decision of the senator to resign.

Republican legislative leaders did not return calls.

The head of the powerful panel that oversees the Legislature's business between sessions stepped down days after the report about his text messages was published.

The Forum of Fargo reported on April 15 that there were 72 text messages exchanged in August. Morgan-Derosier is accused of having thousands of images and videos depicting sexually abused children. He is accused of taking two children under the age of 10 from Minnesota to his Grand Forks home with the intent of sexually abusing them.

When he announced on April 20 that he was quitting his leadership post on the Management Committee, he referred questions from the AP to his attorneys.

In an interview with the Forum, he said he had not read the newspaper story about the charges, but later said he had.

He told the Forum that his text messages with Morgan-Derosier were related to a variety of things. He told the newspaper that he no longer has the text messages.

They're just gone, he said.

The Democratic Party Chairman called for the Legislative Management to step down and release the text messages.

One of the Legislature's most powerful lawmakers for decades has been the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He chaired the Legislative Management committee, which decides committee assignments and chooses study topics that inspire legislation four times.

He was a member of the Emergency Commission, which allocates funding and resources in times of an emergency, and chaired several GOP-led committees.

He said that the stress of a session and a campaign would make it harder for him to concentrate on the matters at hand.

Burgum and many other North Dakota Republicans showered Holmberg with praise.

The Legislature's state-funded health insurance plan is worth about $1,425 a month.

Legislators are paid $526 a month and $189 a day during a session or if they meet for a committee hearing. Legislative majority and minority leaders are paid an additional $377 a month. During a legislative session, committee leaders are paid an additional $10 a day, and $5 a day for an interim committee meeting.

Through May, Holmberg will be paid.
