Mark Reuss, the president of GM, said on CNBC Monday that a fully electric version of the Chevy Corvette would be released next year.
The all-electric Vette is coming very quickly, but Reuss wouldn't confirm when it would debut.
It's an addition to the great performance that Chevrolet and Corvette have been known for for many years with our internal combustion engine, Reuss said.
Ford's decision to release an electric mustang caused a lot of excitement and controversy. The loud exhaust and impressive power of the Corvette has been associated with it. GM seems confident that it can still win over new customers despite the fact that a completely silent, instantly Torque-y version of the Corvette may upset some long-time fans.
“This is coming very quick.”
Reuss says that an electric version of Vette will be out next year. It's likely he means a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid with a rechargeable battery. The new Corvette will not be a full EV, according to a GM spokesman.
The Chevrolet lineup has been updated to include the latest vehicle to be electric. GM announced last year that it would be releasing electric versions of its SUVs. The Chevrolet Equinox will retail for $30,000 in the US in an effort to drive broader adoption of electric vehicles. The company plans to release an electric pickup truck.
Chevy would be at the forefront of GM's $35 billion push toelectrify its entire lineup by 2040 with the arrival of the Silverado, Equinox, Blazer, and Corvette EV. The company is also making the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV, the Hummer EV pickup and SUV, the GMC Sierra EV, and the Cadillac Lyriq and Celestiq.
The other Chevy vehicles are not being replaced. The battery replacements for the all-electric version of the Chevy Spark were no longer provided by GM. The company is working to make and replace battery packs in over 140,000 electric Chevy Bolts after a series of fires forced the automaker to halt production.
The GM spokesman statement has been updated.
