Tesla Model S Plaid delivery event

You can receive The Station every weekend in your inbox.

The Station is your central hub for all past, present and future means of moving people and packages from point A to point B.

The agenda for the sessions is out. There will be more announcements to come, I think we put together a pretty sweet program.

I have a special offer for subscribers who are interested in the event. To receive a code for a free expo only ticket, complete the form found here. We will give out 15 free passes on a first-come, first-served basis. You will receive an email with your offer the week of April 25. If you are not one of the first 15, we will send you a code for a significant discount as we want to thank you.

The expo only passes won't give you access to the main stage, but they will allow you to mix it up with startup founders in the expo area and get exclusive analyst content online with replays.

The EV SPAC guide is one of the other recommendations. We will continue to update this as a living document. She writes that if 2020 and 2021 were the years of the SPAC, it will be the year of the reprimand.

Rebecca Bellan has another story to share. Her founder Q&A series is continuing. She interviewed Anuja Sonalker.

I recently tested three Jeep concepts and I propose that Stellantis make three of them.

Micromobbin’

Let's get to this week.

Putting the “hell” in Helbiz

I decided to take a look at the earnings under a microscope to make sense of it all. I am still confused as to how this company is keeping its head above water as it continues to spend far more than it earns with little cash to back up its wild ventures into new business areas.

Alex and I wanted to know if the business philosophy of the company was based on the tried-and-true method of throwing. What sticks will help the company raise more capital?

Cites 🤝 Micromobility

e-scooters can better integrate with public transportation systems according to a report released by Superpedestrian. I don't think shared micromobility can ever work, or even become profitable, if it isn't properly integrated into public transit, so this report is very validation on a personal level.

Pittsburgh, Madrid, Seattle and Milwaukee are some of the cities that are beginning to successfully integrate micromobility and public transit. The report offers suggestions for policymakers based on the programs seen in these cities.

Move PGH in Pittsburgh is an example of a intermodal transportation hub. It is as easy to install e-scooter parking at major public transit stops as it is to install it at a train terminal.

The integration of a micromobility fare system with public transit fares will lead to lower costs for riders. The report did not mention this, but it has been done in Australia.

Improve on-the-ground info and integrate trip planning features. Micromobility is something we want to include in the transit system.

Equity programs should be expanded in micromobility. Superpedestrian says that people who use its LINK-Up and LINK Serv programs are more likely to use scooters to get to a transit stop.

Deploy micromobility vehicles to fill overnight gaps in public transit. This is helpful for the workers who don’t work a traditional 9-5 and still need a reliable way to get to work and home.

Hunter, a Portuguese electric skateboard company, has just raised a $1.3 million seed round, launched its first U.S.-based operations in LA, and is about to launch a limited quality batches of its Hunter Boards in May. It has a suspension system that Hunter says ensures better stability, and is a cool-looking aluminum board that can hit 34 mph. The board costs $1,999. Interested shredders can sign up.

The delivery e-bike business is being built out by some heavy hitters, including Jules Flynn, former vice president of operations for Lyft; Alan Wells, former employee of Cruise and a Bain & Company consultant; and Michelle Crocker, a consultant.

Bird has launched its smart bikeshare program in Madrid. Bird's shared e- bikes will be integrated into Madrid's Mobility 360 transit app and the city's BiciMAD public bikeshare available on the Bird app.

See you next week!

Deal of the week

money the station

The company is now worth $5 billion. I'm talking about Musk's tunnel-building-for-urban-transport business.

The Boring Company raised $675 million in a Series C round. The other companies that participated were 8VC, Craft Venture, DFJ Growth, and Valor Equity Partners. Musk used that news cycle to spread the word that The Boring Company is hiring for more than 70 open positions in Austin and Bastrop, Texas as well as in Las Vegas, where it recently received approval to expand its tunnel under the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Since the beginning of the Boring Company, I have found it to be a curious business. The company and Musk don't seem to offer any evidence that digging tunnels is a better solution than a subway or train. It was a question I asked Musk during a press conference when the Boring Company held a splashy event to demonstrate the tunnel. I didn't get a good answer and haven't found one today.

Hyperloop is a futuristic high-speed means of transit. The company states on its website that hyperloop networks allow high-speed regional transportation. Access to high-speed transportation is possible with the help of the Hyperloop.

Hyperloop is far from being a reality. At least in Vegas, the loop project uses cars.

Curbed recently had an article about a project in Austin that appears to pivot to pedestrians.

Other deals got my attention this week.

The company raised $375 million in a Series B, funds that will be used for growth and operations as the company progresses towards FAA certification of its eVTOL aircraft, ALIA-250.

Convoy, a digital freight network, raised $260 million in fresh funding to scale up new initiatives in trucking technology.

Di Di Global will apply to list on a different exchange before it delists its shares in the U.S. Di Di will vote on delisting its shares from the New York Stock Exchange on May 23.

Mobility 54, the venture capital arm of Toyota Tsusho, led a pre-seed funding round for Etap, a Nigerian car insurance tech startup.

Just Eat Takeaway is considering a sale. It reminds me of an article written by Alex Wilhelm about why profits in the food delivery business are hard to come by.

The company raised more than $20 million in Series B financing, led by Anxin Capital, with participation from Value Capital and Nuoyan Capital.

PBSC Urban Solutions is a Canadian bikeshare equipment and technology company. This move will double the company's scale.

A merger between Iconiq Holding and East Stone Acquisition will create a company with an implied valuation of $2.5 billion.

Tupy SA signed a deal to buy a motor maker. The deal has an enterprise value of almost $200 million.

The Federal Highway Administration announced a new program that will allow states to get $6.4 billion in formula funding over the next five years to develop carbon reduction strategies.

A $110 million IPO was filed by a Chinese company targeting the transportation industry. The company said in a securities filing that it is looking for a transportation company that is focused on battery or EV charging technology and software, as well as the hardware or software side of advanced driver assistance systems. The SPAC will focus on companies with a valuation between $200 million and $600 million.

A Mexico City-based startup that developed software to match gig workers with e-commerce fulfillment centers has raised$40 million in Series A financing. Existing investors include NFX, Accel, Maya Capital, and Hans Tung of GGV Capital.

Project CAVForth is a joint funded pilot by the UK Government and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles. The buses have control technology from Fusion Processing.

Cities

Pittsburgh will start a pilot on Monday that will replace existing loading areas with camera-enabled zones that can automate access and payments for delivery drivers. This seems like a really interesting andunderappreciated way to reduce curbside congestion, and therefore reduce emissions, while putting some extra coin in the city's coffers that can be dedicated to more transport-focused initiatives.
