Johnny Depp has been testifying for three days in a libel trial about whether or not he was defamed in a newspaper op-ed.

The trial has turned into a spectacle in which the actor testified about everything from taking pills as a child to a near mental breakdown in which he said he used his severed finger to write on the walls in his own blood.

Why is it doing this?

Heard's lawyers warned that the trial would be a mudslinging soap opera that would expose the real Johnny Depp, despite the public attention brought to his drug use and violent text messages.

It killed me that people would think I was a fraud when I met them.

The actor said that his movie career suffered after Heard wrote an op-ed piece in The Washington Post in which she referred to herself as a public figure representing domestic abuse.

The accusations Heard made when she sought a restraining order against him were a clear reference to them.

The accusations made him a Hollywood outcast and cost him his role in the lucrative Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise.

Heard's lawyers argued that Heard's opinion piece was accurate and did not defame him. They have said that The Walt Disney Co. had already decided to ax Depp from Pirates of the Caribbean months before the article was published.

What are the issues?

During their brief marriage, Heard said that she was sexually and physically abused by Depp, often in situations where he drank so much he blacked out.

Heard's allegations of his substance abuse have been grossly embellished, and he was never out of control during that time. The two met in 2009, got married in 2015, and Heard filed for divorce a year later.

The attorneys for Heard have shown many text messages that were sent to friends from a time when he claimed he was not a problematic drinker.

In England, the same lawsuit was filed against a newspaper. The judge there found that Heard was put in fear for her life many times because of the assaults by Depp.

Heard is expected to testify.

How did DEPP and Heard meet?

The Rum Diary is a movie that was produced by Johnny Depp and was based on a novel by Hunter S. Thompson.

Heard is the perfect embodiment of the book's femme fatale character.

The early part of their relationship was portrayed as a classic Hollywood romance by Depp. In the 1944 film To Have and Have, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall used nicknames for Heard and Steve.

The age difference between himself and Heard is 25 years older than that between Bogart and Bacall, according to the actor.

He acknowledged that he was the old, craggy fogey and that she was beautiful.

How did their marriage fall apart?

When he felt that he was just wrong about everything, things began to change in his marriage.

Heard made little digs at him and berated him. There was no way in or out of the argument, which was sort of a rapid-fire, sort of endless parade of insults.

Heard began attacking him. He said she threw two bottles of alcohol at him, one of which exploded and severed his finger. He used the blood to write on his walls and recount the lies Heard had told him. At the hospital, he told the doctors that he had hurt himself. Heard's lawyers say he cut his own finger.

What happened on the Boston flight?

One of the main points of contention is what happened on a private flight from Boston to Los Angeles that Depp and Heard took while he was filming Black Mass.

Heard said that she was attacked on the flight by Depp.

He admitted to taking two pills that he admits he was addicted to and locked himself in the bathroom and fell asleep to avoid her badgering.

He told the court that he only drank a glass of champagne on the flight. The actor Paul Bettany received texts from the man that mentioned drinking half a bottle of whiskey, a thousand Red Bull vodkas, and two bottles of Champagne before the flight.

The attorneys for Heard pointed to text messages that were sent to Heard after the flight, saying that she was in a place of shame and regret.

What else did the person say in the text?

Attorneys for Heard focused on text messages that were sent to Bettany in which he expressed a desire to kill Heard.

After he said he wanted to burn her, he wrote, "Let's drown her before we burn her!" I will make sure she's dead after that.

In the heat of the pain he was feeling, he went to dark places and compared his writing to that of Tommy Thompson.

There are moments of mortality.

Despite the accusations and text messages being read to the court, Depp's testimony has at times featured humorous moments.

When asked if he would drink whiskey in the morning, he replied, "I mean, isn't happy hour any time?"

When asked if he had ever given a pill to Marilyn Manson, he admitted that he once gave him a pill to stop talking so much.

The 2003 megahit, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," in which he played the psychotic Captain Jack Sparrow, has never been watched by the actor. The film did pretty well, according to the man, who smiled and said, "I didn't see it, but..."

There is the bizarre matter of the penis being vandalised. After Heard severed his finger, the actor said he drew a penis on a painting.

Why is this happening in Virginia?

The trial is taking place in Virginia.

Heard's lawyers wanted the case to be tried in California, where the actors reside. The Washington Post's computer server is located in Virginia and that is where the case was brought.

The laws in Virginia are more favorable to the case of Johnny Depp.
