Some California residents heard noises all winter and found a family of bears under their house.

The BEAR League, a nonprofit organization that says on its website that its mission is to help people live in harmony with bears, detailed the incident in a Facebook post on Tuesday. The residents of the home had been hearing strange noises throughout the winter. The league did not say whether the residents of the home were a family.

When the bears woke up, the humans in the house could no longer deny that there was a bear under the house. The mother bear was brought in to the BEAR League, only to be surprised by the fourcubs also living under the house, according to the Facebook post.

The group said on Facebook that the mother bear had threecubs last year before she adopted an orphan in the fall and settled in for the winter.

The organization noted that neighbors of the home thought the noises were made by the people in the house.

The process of getting the bears to leave the area involved being territorial and scary, which made the bears believe they were not going to be safe there, according to the Executive Director of the BEAR League.

The league watched as the family regrouped on the other side of the fence after the bears left the house. Bryant told HuffPost that an electrical barrier was installed in the crawl space to give a small shock to any bears trying to enter.

Bryant told the outlet that her organization is kept very busy by bears living under crawl space, and that she removes several bears a day. She said there are about 100 to 150 bears that attempt to hibernate under homes in the Lake Tahoe area.

She told HuffPost that people need to make sure their crawl space openings are closed and secured before bears enter.
