Sonic the Hedgehog 2 brought in more of the franchise's lore, not just in the form of the Blue Blur's friends Tails and Knuckles. With a third film and Knuckles spinoff already greenlit, the question among fans has become what other elements from the games will be incorporated into future live-action material. If you watched the film's post-credits scenes, you already know that the third film will bring in one of the franchise's biggest players.

The military is cleaning up the aftermath of the battle when they are informed of a research facility that has been around for decades. The test subject is contained in that facility. The film ends with Shadow waking up and opening his eyes. Shadow is one of Sonic's greatest rivals and shares many of the same characteristics. He was designed to be the Ultimate Lifeform to protect humanity, and his methods often put him at odds with Sonic and company. He has become a fan favorite, and at one point even headline his own game, which is a cult classic and has a killer opening song.

In an interview with the Green Hill Zone, the film's co-writer PatCasey talked about what to expect from Shadow when he shows up to make trouble for Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the next film. When asked if he was the film's post-credits stinger because of his popularity or because of what he could bring to the films going forward, he admitted that the primary reason was because of his popularity and what he could bring to the films going forward. The key difference is that Shadow isn't understood like the red echidna was in the sequel. Shadow was created to protect the world from danger, but the way he goes about it will put him at odds with Sonic and friends.

Sonic has never had to deal with someone as emotionally damaged as Shadow.

The sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog is in theaters.
