Ben Simmons was listed as out for the Boston Celtics game by the Brooklyn Nets.
The Nets and Simmons were expecting him to play, but he woke up Sunday with back pain, according to sources.
Sources said the team and Simmons agreed he would stay out for Game 4.
Simmons requested a trade from the 76ers over the summer and has not played in an NBA game since. He was dealt to the Nets before the trade deadline but has been dealing with a back injury.
Nets coach Steve Nash said after Sunday's practice that he had no idea if Simmons would make his season debut Monday or not, but that it would depend on how Simmons felt after the last few days of workouts.
Nash made it clear that Simmons would have to be comfortable before the Nets would put him back on the floor, even though Simmons said Friday that he was hopeful to play at some point in this series.
The Nets are on the verge of elimination in the first-round series against the Celtics.
