Why Liverpool-Man City isn't an all-time great rivalry (1:28)

There are other football rivalries. The song is called "1:28."

3:22 PM ET

After a 2-0 win at Anfield in the 240th Merseyside derby, it is possible that Everton will slide towards the bottom of the table.

In order for the 241st edition of this fixture to take place in the premier league next season, Frank Lampard'sEverton must mount a dramatic revival in the final month of this campaign.

This was a football rivalry that boiled down to when one team is up and the other is down. It's possible forLiverpool to win everything they can this season, but they're in danger of being demoted from the top division for the first time in 61 years. They are poles apart, and the goals from Andy Robertson and Divock Origi could have big implications for both sides.

We deserved the three points, and if anyone thinks we will fly through these games, I can apologize.

If we can create atmospheres like today, it is difficult to deal with us for 95 minutes, but thank God the game has two halves because we did not play well in the first half.

If the Reds bag all four trophies and the Blues end up in the bottom three, it will be difficult for the locals to take.

The animosity between the two sets of supporters has grown since the days when it was dubbed the Friendly Derby in the 1980s, and it was definitely present at the game.

The fear was felt on both sides, with the dread of their neighbours causing a damaging blow to a season's objectives, while the loathing was there with theEverton fans turning their backs when "You'll Never Walk Alone" was sung.

In response, the fans of the neighbours city chanted "This is your last trip to Anfield!" and "Go Down!" as the players claimed the victory that once again moved them to within a point of leaders Manchester.

There are five games left for both City andLiverpool, and neither looks like dropping points between now and the final round of games on May 22. The pursuit of glory in the European competition, as well as the FA Cup clash with Chelsea, is something that is being pursued by the Reds.

The motivation of the opponent was at a higher level than a routine fixture, so neither side would have enjoyed the game. Top teams tend to succeed because they take the unpredictability and emotion out of the equation.

The only way to upset a big team is by upsetting their rhythm, and that was the approach taken byEverton. The players were ready to fight and broke the game down with time-wasting and tactical fouls.

The referee was unable to control the two teams in the first half, as they tried to dragLiverpool into a scrap. Anthony Gordon gave the Reds problems with his pace and running. The 21-year-old, who was booked for diving in the penalty area in the first half, was unfortunate not to win a penalty when he appeared to be pushed to the ground by Matip eight minutes into the second half.

I think they both could have been penalties. He gets booked because of his contact. There was a foul on the pitch in the second one. Sometimes you don't get them here.

The top teams find a way to win when the opponent is stubborn, and with the 60th-minute substitution of Klopp, the top teams found a way to win.

Within two minutes, Origi had created the opening for Mohamed Salah to cross for Robertson, who had not scored in over a year.

The Belgium forward made it 2-0 when he headed in from close range after the Spaniard had attempted an overhead kick, earning him a place in the folklore of the club. It was six goals in 12 games against the team, twice as many as he has scored against any other team.

It was a goal that secured victory for the Reds and made them feel better about their chances.

There was no silver lining forEverton. They have to travel to top-four-chasing Arsenal and face Chelsea at home next. By the time they kick off against the Blues on Sunday, there is a chance that they will be in even deeper trouble.

They have six games to save their season. That is in the hands of the team. When it comes to the pursuit of history, they can only hope for the best.
