A far-right populist who has attacked the European Union and NATO and expressed support for Russia was defeated by French PresidentEmmanuelMacron.

According to projected results from the French news media and national pollsters, Marine Le Pen lost the presidential election by a wide margin.

Shortly after the projection, Le Pen conceded. She said that she improved her performance from five years ago.

She told supporters that the game is not over.

Five years ago, Le Pen was defeated by more than 50% of the vote.

Despite protests of his economic policies and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the man who built his own political party to run for president in 2017, won a second term.

His reelection dealt a blow to the populist movements that have upended politics across the Western world.

When one puts back together a project brick by brick, it's a project that's about getting out of the EU, even if it doesn't explicitly say so.

The news of the reelection of Macron was greeted with relief by American and European government officials. The analysts in the United States pointed out that President Joe Biden has approval ratings of less than 40% and is considering a reelection run.

The White House Chief of Staff said that it was an interesting observation. Hmm...

France votes in a presidential election.

Marine Le Pen is fighting for the French presidency.

Far-right Le Pen's came out strong after first round

Two weeks ago, Le Pen came within 5 percentage points of Macron in the first round of voting, fanning fears of an ultranationalistic turn in French politics. In this campaign, Le Pen called for banning Muslim women from wearing headscarves in public.

In a Friday interview on BFM television in France, Macron cast the election as a choice between leaving or not leaving Europe and abandoning the secular republic.

Le Pen said that France had surrendered its sovereignty to the EU and NATO.

In the runup to the election, French voters expressed anxiety over issues that have shaped politics in the United States and elsewhere: inflation, a sluggish economy, and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

After the first round of voting two weeks ago, the top two candidates from a crowded field were elected. In a close race, Macron finished with 27.85% of the vote, and Le Pen with 23.15%.

The narrow margin prompted more political activity by Macron, who had focused on his government job and did very little campaigning before that first round.

The French president warned his supporters not to take anything for granted after polls showed him expanding his lead.

Macron and Russia's war in Ukraine

The Western response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine was spearheaded by the work of Macron.

A victory by Le Pen would have been a big propaganda victory for Putin and his government.

During the campaign, he told Le Pen that she was speaking to her bankers if she spoke to Russia.

Le Pen sought to change her image after losing the presidential election. She changed the national party from the National Front to the National Rally, reversing her opposition to the euro.

Marine Le Pen has a far-right vision of retooling France at home and abroad.

The French President was slapped in the face while visiting a small village.

Le Pen focused more on economic anxiety expressed by French voters. Her target is the plan to raise the pension age from 62 to 65.

The challenger wanted to give the French money back.

A Le Pen victory would have meant drastic changes for the French and their relationship with the EU and NATO, organizations with close ties to the United States. France has nuclear weapons and is the second-largest economy in the EU.

The second term for the French president is for his global agenda.

It looks like those repetitive self-feeding newspaper predictions that this would be a nailbiter because France hated Macron so much and Le Pen now so reassuring were all wrong.

The results of the French election are a victory for the EU, NATO and their U.S. allies, but also a warning that the populism of the Le Pen type is not dead.

Benjamin Haddad is the senior director of the Europe Center at the Atlantic Council. Sunday's voter turnout was low by French standards.

Haddad said there is discontent. There is anger at the cost of living.

He said that the candidate rallied his candidacy with a strong debate showing last week and seems ready to pursue a liberal agenda.

There are things he will have to address.
