In weekend three, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came in second with $15.225 million, bringing its 17-day total to 145.8 million. It will zoom past that milestone and become the first video game movie to top $150 million in a matter of days. It looks like an over/under $185 million domestic finish, which would be a 25% upswing. Tomb Raider is the only video game movie with an inflation-adjusted domestic earnings of more than 200 million. The film has passed $255 million worldwide, hopefully setting the stage for a triple your $110 million budget finish.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald opened to a lot more money than later Harry Potter movies, but it only opened to a small amount in the second weekend. The threequel earned an additional 14 million dollars to bring its domestic total to over $65 million. The third Eddie Redmayne-led period-piece fantasy will not crack $100 million domestic. It held well overseas with $38 million and a new foreign total of $216 million. $375 million seems more likely because of the $200 million budget overruns. With most narrative strands wrapped up like a bow, I can't imagine that this proposed five-part franchise hasn't retroactively become a trilogy.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Everything at once.

A24

Everything, Everywhere All At Once filled me with false hope and unrealistic expectations for the future of Covid-era theatrical. Forget that normal rate of descent, this one earned another $5.425 million for a new $26.9 million 31 day cume. It will pass $30 million domestic by next Sunday and could end up over 40 million by the end. The action-comedy will be A 24's fourth biggest film in a day or three, and might threaten Hereditary and Lady Bird. The $25 million multiverse fantasy would be a huge hit in non-vid times.

The Lost City earned $4.37 million in five days. That will give the original $70 million a 31 day total of $85.3 million and a path to a $100 million-plus domestic total. With an upcoming summer with almost nothing specifically aimed at adult women, that's especially true. I don't know what Paramount is doing right after doing so much wrong for the last six years, but I hope Brian Robbins can continue what Jim Gianopulos started. Father Stu earned $3.325 million in weekend two for a total of $13.9 million over the course of a 12-day period. A $19.2 million 17-day total will be earned by the ambulance. You can pay over $20 for this Michael Bay gem when it arrives later this week.

'The Batman'

The Batman.

Warner Bros.

Morbius will make $2.25 million in the four-day period for a domestic and worldwide total of $150 million. That is a whiff even on a $75 million budget. Sony's movie, "Uncharted", has $393 million worldwide. The Batman lost 731 theaters and made 1.5 million dollars. It has a domestic hit of $368 million and a worldwide hit of $759 million. The loss of theaters, the onslaught of competition on all sides, and the debut on Monday of HBO Max all contributed to the big drop. Since A Quiet Place part II, when a hit film arrives early, on streaming and/or video on demand, it doesn't affect the theatrical box office. I'm inclined to argue a combination of the three, but we'll see.
