I moved to a 90-person town after spending my entire life in a city.

At the beginning of the year, I moved from a city to a small town in Canada, but I was born and raised in a city.

There was never a question about whether or not I would join him when he relocated. I still had some reservations.

I thought we would stay in Beaver Creek for the shortest time possible and move on. I realized this place would change my life when I arrived.

The things that surprised me the most after the move are listed.

I was amazed by the support from my neighbors.

The weather in Beaver Creek can be very cold and dark in the winter. We are a 10-hour round trip from the nearest hospital.

People check in with each other. They offer to pick up groceries when they go five hours into town, help if you have vehicle troubles, and give you the cup of sugar you are missing.

At the height of the coronaviruses, I had a flat tire. The Alaska Highway was quieter than usual. I had the jack under the car and I was trying to remove the tire that had seized onto the wheel.

The first and second cars stopped to help. A local Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer came out to help me, but when he couldn't, he drove an hour and a half to ask a neighbor for help.

That is what you do up here.

I learned to cook.

The Whole Foods salad bar was as close as I could get to cooking before I moved. A friend once stayed at our apartment while we were on holiday and lamented that we didn't own a single pot or pan.

I was in for a shock when I had to learn how to cook and stock a pantry with food that lasts six to eight weeks in between shopping trips.

The drive to the nearest grocery store is beautiful. Bears, moose, lynx, coyotes, and even wolves can be seen on the Alaska Highway. It is a 10 hours round trip.

I was surprised to find that I enjoy cooking. I like to plan our meals, organize the freezer and pantry, and think ahead.

I have learned to make yogurt and preserves. I bake my own bagels. I also make pies, kettle corn, and candied fruits if we want a sweet.

I have connected with the land around me.

I had easy access to restaurants, shops, parks, beaches, and mountains, and I didn't think about it. I was horrified when I learned we were moving.

How would I survive without this?

I was surprised that remote Northern Canada has made me appreciate the outdoors.

I enjoy hiking and cross-country skiing and marvel at how lucky I am. Hilary has embraced Beaver Creek and my friends and family can't believe it.

I have learned to love my alone time.

I've used my alone time to connect with nature.Hilary Messer-Barrow

"Aren't you lonely?" is a question I hear a lot when people find out about my living situation.

I was lonely during those first few months. My husband worked 12-hour shifts, sometimes during the day and sometimes at night.

Time was dragged. In the dead of winter, it is easy to walk in Beaver Creek without seeing a soul. There was no real human interaction outside of my husband.

I wanted to learn how to cook. I did my home workouts. I worked from home with remote work. I called my friends and family in Canada. The days were long and the loneliness was overwhelming.

I learned to embrace my time alone in nature. There are mountains, trees, and zigzagging rivers and streams in the area.

Compared to green spaces in the city, the land here is untouched, and has been transformational.

The most relaxing part of my day is alone time outside. No matter the weather, I cannot live without it.

The lack of light affected me.

The winter nights are long and dark.Hilary Messer-Barrow

The nights are long and the days are not as light. The sun came up around noon, but it was gone within hours.

I found it tiring. I was an early riser, but by 4 pm it had changed to being 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 I wanted to sleep.

I learned to get outside even in the dark. I learned to love the moon and stars.

The dark winters were definitely an adjustment, but the light in the summers surprised me. The midnight sun comes slowly but surely.

I told a lifelong Northerner that I had no problem falling asleep, so I was confident the midnight sun wouldn't affect me. I was wrong.

In the summer, I find myself working away at something that is not known to me. In the first summer, I lay awake in bed, trying to relax, my whole body wanting to do a workout, tackle a deep clean, or complete a 1,000-piece puzzle.

At this time of year, a rigid evening routine is essential.

I was surprised by how well I adapted to the changes.

I've learned new skills and more about myself.Hilary Messer-Barrow

The move was petrifying because I don't like change.

I am much stronger than I thought, I can cook, I can change a tire, and I can garden.

I would have laughed had someone told me five years ago that I was the person I am today. I am so happy here.
